127,105 licences (0:00)

A hundred and twenty seven thousand employers hold a sponsor licence. But last year, fewer than half of that number sponsored anyone. Fifty nine and a half thousand. So if you're looking for a sponsored job, the question isn't who has a licence. It's who sponsors your job, in your town.

The explorer (0:22)

The Home Office publishes those numbers. On ImmigrationGPT they're on one page, the sponsorship explorer. Start with the map. Every bubble is a town. The bigger the bubble, the more employers there sponsored someone last year. London is in a league of its own. Seventeen thousand one hundred and fifty three employers. Then Birmingham, one thousand four hundred and sixty six, and Manchester, one thousand two hundred and thirty six.

Your town (0:51)

Now find your town. Here's Leeds. Five hundred and two employers there sponsored someone last year. On the site, pick the town and the whole page changes to match. One thing to know. The town is where the employer is registered. Often a head office, not always where the job is.

Your job (1:09)

Next, your job. Type it in. Here, care worker. Care workers and home carers is the most sponsored job in the country. Eight thousand two hundred and ninety seven employers sponsored it in the last two years. Between them, at least fifty two thousand workers last year. But look at visas from abroad for the same job. They fell to almost nothing. The job report says why. Since July last year, employers can't sponsor someone from outside the UK for it on the Skilled Worker visa. Most of the sponsoring now is for people already here.

Town pages (1:45)

For Leeds, the explorer lists the jobs employers there sponsor most, and each one links to its full report. It works on your phone, too. So, one thing to do today. Search your job and your town, and see who actually sponsors it.

Before you rely on it (2:00)

These are Home Office figures. Small counts are hidden, so totals are shown as at least. It's information, not advice on your own case.
