Children aged 8 and over can now use eGates if they travel with an adult and measure at least 120cm tall. The rule change takes effect on 8 July 2026.
The Home Office estimates that 1.5 million more children will become eligible over the next year based on 2025 arrival figures. More than 290 eGates already operate at UK airports, ports and juxtaposed locations.
What the new rules cover
The change coincides with the start of summer holidays in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Minister Alex Norris stated that the update will reduce hassle for families and free time for tourists.
Work continues on contactless border technology that uses facial comparison to verify identity without a passport. This is general information.
EU Entry/Exit System reminder
Families travelling to Europe should check details on the EU Entry/Exit System. It records entries and exits for non-EU nationals and requires initial registration of passport, fingerprints and photo.
