Nigerian High Commission Distances Itself from Alleged Visa Fraudster
The Nigerian High Commission in London has stated it has no association with Nurudeen Alowonle, also known as Benjamin Kuti or 'Oluomo of Derby'. This follows reports linking him to a scandal involving Skilled Worker visas and Certificates of Sponsorship, as covered by SaharaReporters.
Alowonle previously served as president of the Nigerians in the UK community on X (NIUK), representing over 50,000 members across the country. He stepped down in February 2025 amid separate financial fraud allegations, according to the source.
Beware of Visa Scams
Individuals claiming official connections to embassies or high commissions for visa services typically lack legitimacy. The rules state that official visa processes go through authorised channels like the UK Home Office, per SaharaReporters.
Background on the Allegations
- Victims reportedly trusted Alowonle due to his claims of ties to the Nigerian High Commission.
- He allegedly posted images with commission officials on social media to build credibility.
- This comes after a recent report on his involvement in a Certificate of Sponsorship scandal for Skilled Worker visas.
Skilled Worker visas generally require a valid Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed UK sponsor. Fraudsters often exploit this by promising sponsorships for fees, but according to SaharaReporters, such schemes misuse community trust.
