According to gov.uk guidance, those who have started a UK visa application and provided an email address can typically sign back in to continue where they left off. This process involves using a registration email from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The rules state that access relies on following specific steps, with certain limitations applying after periods of inactivity.

Overview of Signing Back Into Your UK Visa Application
Gov.uk explains that signing in requires the email used during the application. The registration email, sent by UKVI, contains a link to access the account. Subject lines generally include phrases like 'UK visa application: sign in details' or notifications about account creation.
Email Check Reminder
Always search inbox, junk, or spam folders, as per gov.uk instructions, since emails might not appear in primary folders.
Steps to Sign Back In
Locate the Registration Email
Find the UKVI email sent to the address entered in the application. Look for subject lines indicating sign-in details or account creation.
Follow the Link
Click the sign-in link provided in the email to proceed to the login page.
Enter Sign-In Details
Provide either a created password or details from the identity document used (such as passport number) along with date of birth.
These steps align with gov.uk's outlined process. However, access may be restricted if the application has not been accessed for over 10 weeks, according to the guidance.
Inactivity Warning
Gov.uk states that sign-in may not be possible after more than 10 weeks without returning to the application. In such cases, alternative actions might be needed depending on identity verification method.
Identifying and Finding Your Registration Email
- Emails from UKVI typically have subjects like 'UK visa application: sign in details'.
- Another common subject is 'Your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account has been created'.
- The sign-in link is embedded within the email body.
Gov.uk advises checking all folders if the email is not immediately visible. This ensures users do not overlook the necessary link.
Handling Lost or Missing Registration Emails
The guidance differentiates based on how identity was verified. For in-person appointments, UKVI does not resend emails or links, requiring a new application start. For 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app users, account recovery is generally available.
| Identity Verification Method | Action if Email Lost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| In-person appointment | Start a new application | UKVI cannot resend email or link, per gov.uk. |
| 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app | Recover UKVI account | Allows continuation after recovery. |
Entering Your Sign-In Details
- Password, if one was created during setup.
- Details from identity document: passport, national identity card, biometric residence card, or permit.
- Date of birth associated with the document.
After clicking the email link, the system prompts for these elements, as described in gov.uk guidance.
Password Creation and Reset Rules
Password Requirements According to Gov.uk
Users who set a password during the process follow these criteria. A dedicated reset option exists for forgotten passwords, enabling continued access.
Key Considerations for UKVI Accounts
UKVI accounts are created upon application start if using the ID check app. Recovery processes support ongoing applications. Gov.uk emphasises that email entry is foundational for all sign-ins.
- 1Enter email at application outset.
- 2Receive and store registration email securely.
- 3Return within 10 weeks to avoid access issues.
- 4Use appropriate identity details for login.
Identity Document Specificity
Only details from the exact document used in the application work for sign-in, as per gov.uk rules.
Common Scenarios and Limitations
Inactivity beyond 10 weeks often blocks sign-in, prompting users to review verification methods. In-person proofs lead to new starts, while app-based ones allow recovery.
| Scenario | Typical Outcome | Gov.uk Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Over 10 weeks inactive | May not sign in | Requires checking verification type. |
| Lost email, app verification | Account recovery possible | Continue application post-recovery. |
| Lost email, in-person verification | New application needed | No resend available. |
| Wrong sign-in details | Prompt for reset or document info | Follow on-screen instructions. |
Additional Guidance on UKVI Emails and Links
Emails originate solely from UKVI, ensuring authenticity. Links are time-sensitive or account-specific, aligning with security protocols in gov.uk documentation.
